This technical note documents the direct use of Microsoft SNA Server v2.11 and bypassing the NS/Router.

With release 2.11 of MS-SNA Server it is possible with the 16-bit SNA Client software (SNA Client for Win3.x) to bypass the need to load NS/Router when connecting to the AS/400. In other words, WinAPPC can communicate directly with SNA Server, eliminating the need to install NS/Router. Microsoft has not provided similar support (as of this writing) for the SNA Client for Win95 Client software. Configuration of the SNA Server and Client software is the same as when using NS/Router except for the conditions below.

The steps necessary to accomplish this:

  1. If you have NS/Router installed on your PC you need to delete or rename the EHNAPPC.DLL and EHNRTRW.DLL files in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you do not, the SNA Client install will warn you of pre-existing files during installation.
  2. Install the SNA Client Win3.x software from the Microsoft distribution media. BE SURE TO USE THE MICROSOFT COPY AND NOT THE VERSION SHIPPED WITH NS/ROUTER AS IT IS NOT COMPLETE. If you have already installed the NetSoft copy, then you must remove it and then re-install the Microsoft version. Try to specify the configuration values correctly during installation as there is no separate configuration utility (if you need to change the values you must re-install over the existing copy).
  3. Edit the WIN.INI file with a text editor and locate the following section [SnaServerEHNAPPC]. Add an entry for LocalLU that specifies the APPC local location name (8 characters max) for that PC station (this is the value you would place in the Location Name(Local LU Alias) field when configuring the NS/Router). Each APPC station in the AS/400 network should have an unique value in this entry. The following is a typical example:
                    [SnaServerEHNAPPC]
                    LocalLU=SALES01

  4. In order to use the WinTran file transfer program you must copy the EHNTFW.DLL from the NS/Router directory to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If installing the EHNTFW.DL_ from the NS/Router distribution media, use the EXPAND.EXE program to de-compress the program to a usable form. For example
                    EXPAND A:EHNTFW.DL_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EHNTFW.DLL

  5. Configure and use WinAPPC as you normally would, with the APPC router value set to PCS/Windows or NS/Router.
